Updated: Feb 21, 2019

Lark's head knot, square knot, spiral knot and hitch knot

I will show you the 4 Basic Macramé Knots , very simple and knowing the 4 knots you can make beautiful pieces . Lets start!!!

Lark's Head Knot

The Lark’s head Knot is 1st basic knots in Macramé.  Almost every piece of Macramé you see starts with this knot.  This knot is used to attach your cord or string to your support, either is a ring, a wood or metal piece, our other cord.

  • Start by folding cord ou string in half. It will make a loop in the middle.

  • Then put that loop over your support and behind it, taking it from the front to the back and down

  • Now take the ends of the string through that loop.

  • Pull it tight and that's it!

You lack's Head Knot is done!

Square Knot

This the main knot of macramé and you can see it in almost every piece of Macramé!!

  • Use the Lark's head to tie 2 cords to your support. Know you have 4 cords.

  • The two middle cord stay in the same place, you work with the left and right cords. You can either Begin on the left our right.

  • Take left cord and cross it over the two middle cords, making the shape of a "4".

  • Then take the right cord and place it on top of the left cord and under the two middle cords, going to the hole of the "4".

  • Now pull tight. You have done the half square knot !!!!

  • Do the same on the other side, start with the right cord.

  • Take right cord and cross it over the two middle cords, making the shape of a "P".

  • Then take the Left cord and place it on top of the Right cord and under the two middle cords, going to the hole of the "P".

  • Pull it tight again and you ar done!!!!

Spiral our half square knot

Do you remember what you did in the square knot? It´s the same but always on the same side.

  • Use the Lark's head to tie 2 cords to your support. Know you have 4 cords.

  • The two middle cord stay in the same place, you work with the left and right cords. You can either begin with the left or the right, but remember, when you do this knot you always begin on the same side!!

  • Take left cord and cross it over the two middle cords, making the shape of a "4".

  • Then take the right cord and place it on top of the left cord and under the two middle cords, going to the hole of the "4".

  • Now pull tight. You have done the half square knot !!!!

Repeat this as many times you wish and it will make a twist . Got it?

Double half hitch knot

The double half hitch knot is the "most" basic knot of Macramé, simply your basic knot.

  • Start with a Lark’s head knot. ( you can use 1 our more cords, it depends on what you what to do, I will make the following example).

  • Use 3 cord and tie 3 lark's knot

  • Take the left cord and bring it over the other 5 cords, this cord will be the guide cord, it means the other cords will make the knots and this one will guide the way.

  • Using the 2th cord, make a "U" shape over the guide cord.

  • Put that cord through the “U” hole and pull tight. You made a half hitch knot!

  • Know repeat this, you should do this step twice with the same cord to make the double half hitch knots.

  • Keep holding the guide cord and repeat the the double half hitch knot ( remember to do this twice with the same cord) with 3th, 4th, 5th and 6th cords

  • You are done, you can make a diagonal our a horizontal shape.

Know you have the 4 basic knots. Remember to check our videos to see the tutorial on the knots.
